IBM Ships Granite Switch 4.1.1: AI Model Updates That Work Like Software Patches

Oct 30, 2026: IBM's Granite team published Granite Switch 4.1.1 on Hugging Face on Thursday, Oct. 29, and the interesting part is not the new features but how the update was delivered. IBM is treating a model release like a software patch: a point version that is fully backwards compatible, needs no migration, and leaves the base model untouched.

What's in 4.1.1

Granite Switch is IBM's modular model family: one base model with specialized adapters that can be switched on as needed from a single endpoint. According to IBM's post, version 4.1.1 brings two updates:

  • An updated Granite Speech ASR model for multilingual speech-to-text across 10 languages, now with native punctuation and capitalization, so transcripts don't need a separate formatting pass before another model uses them.
  • An updated Decision adapter in granitelib-core, which IBM says performs better overall on the Jev Decision Index test set.

IBM says that apart from training the new speech model and the Decision adapter, "nothing was recomputed": the base model stayed the same, and users compose the adapters they want and deploy.

The post links three models on Hugging Face: ibm-granite/granite-switch-4.1-30b (30B parameters, text generation), ibm-granite/granite-speech-5.0-470m-turboctc (about 0.5B, speech recognition) and ibm-granite/granitelib-core-r1.0, plus a live "Speech to Decisions with Granite" demo Space.

Why it matters

Most model updates today are all-or-nothing: a new checkpoint, new behavior everywhere, and re-testing for anyone who built on the old one. IBM's pitch is semantic versioning for models: a ".1" bump means compatible, incremental and safe to adopt.

IBM also says it is working on tutorials and an Adapter SDK so outside developers and third-party providers can build, version and ship their own adapters. If that lands, it could make small, targeted model upgrades routine, which matters for anyone running a self-hosted assistant, a voice bot for a game community, or a transcription workflow.

For local-AI users

The 30B Switch model is a mid-size download. Before you try it, check whether it fits your GPU with our Can I run this AI model? calculator, and read the model card for the license and hardware notes.

What's confirmed / not confirmed

Confirmed (IBM Granite on Hugging Face, Oct. 29, 2026): - Granite Switch 4.1.1 is a backwards-compatible patch release of Granite Switch 4.1 (IBM's 4.1 post is dated Oct. 15, 2026). - Updated 10-language speech model with punctuation and capitalization; updated Decision adapter. - The base model was not retrained. - An Adapter SDK and tutorials are planned, with no date given.

Not confirmed: - Benchmark numbers for the improved Decision adapter (the post gives no figures). - Which 10 languages the speech model covers (not listed in the post). - License terms: we did not review the model cards for this article.
