ChatGPT Will Now End Chats That Fixate on Violence, and Teens Get New Weapons Limits

Oct 30, 2026: OpenAI is tightening how ChatGPT handles violence, for adults and teens. In a post dated Oct 30, 2026, the company announced two things: a new public Community Safety Report, with the first edition due in early 2027, and more restrictions on firearms and weapons content for users under 18. It also covers changes for everyone, including the ability to automatically end chats that fixate on violence.

OpenAI says the safeguards "will begin rolling out in the next few weeks."

The headline changes

1. A recurring Community Safety Report

OpenAI is "committing to launch" a report on violence prevention and other community-safety issues. According to the post, it will cover: - how OpenAI trains its systems to detect, investigate and respond to community-safety issues - anonymized examples of how violence-related harm shows up - new mitigations and policy changes, along with "relevant data"

Timing: the first report is due in early 2027 and will cover the second half of 2026. After that, updates come every six months.

2. Tighter limits on past mass attacks, for everyone

ChatGPT will now give less detailed information about past mass attacks and the people who carried them out, "even if it is available from other online sources." OpenAI says it is restricting: - reconstructions of past attacks, including the weapons and equipment used and how they were obtained - detailed comparisons of scale of harm "that could amplify an attacker's notoriety"

People can still ask ChatGPT about these events, how they affected victims, and warning signs. OpenAI says the limits apply "regardless of a user's age or reason for asking."

3. Ending chats, and possibly pausing accounts

  • When recent chats show warning signs of possible violence, ChatGPT will respond more conservatively to requests for information that could be misused. This builds on the "short, factual summaries" of earlier warning signs that OpenAI described in May.
  • When a conversation shows signs of someone "fixating on violence or the idea of seriously harming another person," ChatGPT "will be able to automatically end the chat."
  • If ChatGPT ends multiple chats for that reason, OpenAI says it "may temporarily pause the account."

4. More limits for teens

  • ChatGPT for Teens will further limit weapons-related information, "even when a question appears harmless." That covers practical information about weapons and security systems that could be misused, even with no sign of violent intent.
  • OpenAI says it is working to apply the stricter conservative-response limits when it predicts a user is under 18, even if their chats show no violent intent.
  • Age prediction, launched last year, has been "strengthened" so it keeps checking new signals as people use ChatGPT. Adults who are wrongly placed in the under-18 experience can confirm their age through Persona, OpenAI's age-verification partner.
  • Parental controls: in July, alerts were expanded to tell parents when a teen's account is deactivated for violating violence policies. OpenAI says it is "working to introduce" notifications when a teen's account is paused for repeatedly discussing violence.

The law-enforcement number

OpenAI says it made "over 200 law enforcement referrals in Q3 2026" for imminent threats of violence. This is OpenAI's own figure, and the post doesn't break it down further.

Why it matters

Auto-ending chats and pausing accounts takes ChatGPT from refusing single requests to stepping in on a pattern of behavior. For parents, the teen limits and pause alerts are what matter most.

What's confirmed / not confirmed

Confirmed (OpenAI, "Community safety report and new protections for teens," Oct 30, 2026): - The Community Safety Report is promised for early 2027 (covering H2 2026), then every six months. - New limits on mass-attack reconstructions apply to all users. - ChatGPT will be able to auto-end chats that show violent fixation, and accounts may be paused temporarily after repeated ends. - Teens get tighter limits on weapons and security-system information. Age prediction has been strengthened, and adults can verify through Persona. - OpenAI says it made over 200 law-enforcement referrals in Q3 2026. - Rollout begins "in the next few weeks."

Not confirmed / not disclosed: - Exact rollout dates, regions or plans. - How many warning signs, or how many ended chats, trigger a pause, and how long a pause lasts. - How accurate age prediction is. OpenAI gives no error rates. - When parental notifications for paused accounts will launch. OpenAI only says it is "working to introduce" them. - Independent verification of the 200+ referrals figure.
