Gemini App Can Now Create, Preview and Edit Your Files Right in the Chat

Oct 30, 2026: Until now, getting a document out of a chatbot usually meant copying text into another app and cleaning it up there. Google says that step is gone in the Gemini app. In a post on The Keyword on Oct 29, 2026, Google announced that you can now generate, preview, and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and more directly inside a Gemini chat. Here's what changed, where it works, and what Google hasn't said yet.

What's new

Google's announcement describes three ways to work on a file without leaving the conversation:

  • Edit it yourself. Expand the file to full screen and type changes directly.
  • Ask about a part of it. Highlight text and ask Gemini a question about that section.
  • Have Gemini revise it. Ask Gemini to refine the file, including the text and the visuals.

Google's example: upload photos of your handwritten lecture notes, ask Gemini to turn them into a PDF study guide, then edit it by hand, highlight sections for Gemini to rewrite, and keep asking follow-up questions. The post includes a video of that workflow.

Which formats work where

There's an important platform split in the announcement:

Format Web Mobile
PDF (preview and edit) Yes Yes
Google Docs Yes Not stated
Google Sheets Yes Not stated
Slide decks Yes Not stated
Markdown (.md) and TXT files Yes Not stated
Code Yes Not stated

In Google's words, PDF preview and editing works "on both the web and mobile, while all other formats... are supported on the web only." So if you mostly use Gemini on your phone, PDFs are the only format you can edit in place for now.

Who gets it

Google says the features are "now available to all users in all languages where Gemini app is available." The post doesn't tie them to a paid plan.

Why it matters

This is a workflow change more than a model change. Most people don't use AI assistants for one-off answers. They use them to produce something: a report, a slide outline, a budget sheet, a cleaned-up script. Keeping preview and edit in the same window as the conversation means fewer copy-and-paste round trips, and it lets you point at the exact paragraph you want changed instead of describing it.

For students in particular, the lecture-notes-to-study-guide example is the obvious use. It pairs with Google's other Oct 29 education news: Gemini Notebook now offers hundreds of free textbooks (OpenStax, Open Textbook Library, S Chand Publishing) that it can ground its answers in.

What's confirmed / not confirmed

Confirmed (Google, The Keyword, Oct 29, 2026): - You can generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and more inside a Gemini chat. - Full-screen direct editing, highlight-to-ask, and asking Gemini to refine files (text and visuals). - PDFs work on web and mobile. Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code are web only. - Available to all users in all languages where the Gemini app is available.

Not confirmed / not stated by Google: - File size or page limits, and which upload types count as "code." - Whether edits save back automatically to Google Drive or need an export step. - When the non-PDF formats will come to mobile, if ever. - Any differences between free and paid Gemini plans for this feature. - Whether Workspace business and education admins can control it.

We haven't tested it hands-on yet; rollouts can take time to reach every account.
