Oct 30, 2026: The Tulpar is headed to theaters. On Oct 29, 2026, developer Wrong Organ and publisher CRITICAL REFLEX announced that the film rights to their cult psychological horror game Mouthwashing have been acquired by Sony Pictures' Screen Gems. On the same day, the game finally launched on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

The team put it plainly in its post: "An insane amount of news for a regular Thursday."

The creative team

Per the official announcement:

  • Director: Karyn Kusama (Jennifer's Body, Yellowjackets)
  • Screenplay: Matt Manfredi & Phil Hay (The Invitation, Destroyer)
  • Producers: Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Black Phone), C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng, under their Crooked Highway banner

"As fans of the genre, we couldn't have dreamed of a better team to translate the tension of being stuck on the Tulpar to the big screen," the developers wrote, adding that they'll share updates "as production moves forward."

Trade outlet Deadline (third-party) also reported the deal, describing it as Sony taking the rights with Kusama directing.

Mouthwashing is out now on consoles

The console launch might matter more to players right away. According to the same post, Mouthwashing is now available on:

  • Xbox Series X|S
  • Xbox Game Pass (Ultimate, Premium and PC)
  • PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
  • Nintendo Switch

The developers also say Standard and Deluxe physical editions are coming to PS5 and Switch through Fangamer. The post doesn't give a ship date for those.

In an Oct 20 Steam post marking the game's second anniversary, the team also said the Oct 29 update would add Italian language support.

What Mouthwashing is

For anyone who missed it, Mouthwashing is a first-person psychological horror game about a five-person crew stuck aboard the derelict cargo ship Tulpar. In the developers' words, you "explore the rotting shell of your derelict ship and uncover the truth behind each crew member while battling your own fraying sanity." It first launched on PC, and the studio celebrated its second anniversary on Steam on Oct 20, 2026.

Why it matters

It's rare for a small indie horror game to land a studio film deal with a named director and writers attached from day one. According to The Hollywood Reporter (third-party), Kusama, Manfredi and Hay previously worked together on The Invitation and Destroyer, so the team isn't being assembled from scratch. For players, the console release is the more immediate news, and Game Pass inclusion gives subscribers who skipped the PC version an easy way to try it.
