Oct 30, 2026: War Thunder's next major update has a name: Eagle's Shadow. Gaijin posted the reveal trailer on Oct 29, 2026 (21:26 UTC on Steam, about 5:26 PM ET). Within a day, two dev blogs showed what ground players can expect: a top-tier Leopard 2A8 with an active protection system, and a damage-model overhaul that lets enemies knock out your tank's fire control, electrical system and power unit.
Gaijin hasn't announced a release date yet.
Leopard 2A8: Trophy APS comes to the Leopard family
According to Gaijin's Oct 30 dev blog, the Leopard 2A8 is the "direct successor to the Leopard 2A7 variants already featured in the game." It arrives for two nations:
- Germany
- Sweden, which gets "the Leopard 2A8 variant configured for the Norwegian Army"
Key features (per Gaijin): - Trophy active protection system, with 6 charges. Gaijin says it "alerts you to an incoming missile and automatically intercepts it using countermeasure projectiles positioned around the turret," giving all-around protection against ATGMs "whether launched from the ground or air." - DM53 APFSDS as an unlockable round. The stock APFSDS also "has great penetration power." - Protection: internal spall liner, extra frontal hull armor and extra composite side armor modules. - Gen 3 thermal imagers.
The trade-off: Gaijin says its mobility is "somewhat reduced compared to the more agile 2A4 and 2A5 models," though it "remains highly competitive in top-tier combat."
A developer comment in the blog says the APS works "primarily against helicopters, as well as ground-based ATGM launchers."
Gaijin notes the specs "may be subject to revision and change."
New ground modules: your tank's electronics can now break
The Oct 29 dev blog says these changes arrive "in the next major update":
Fire Control System (FCS)
The FCS becomes its own module that can be damaged or destroyed. If it's disabled, you lose night vision, thermals and the rangefinder. Remote-operated turrets with no manual aiming option are also disabled.
Electrical system
Knock it out and the tank loses the FCS, gun stabilizer, radars, optoelectronic targeting systems, threat-warning system, and even the autoloader.
Manual reloading for autoloader tanks
On tanks that can do it in real life, the crew will load by hand once the autoloader is empty or disabled. While the loader is reloading manually, the autoloader rack won't refill. You have to stop firing to let it refill. X-ray view will show the reload times.
Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)
Many vehicles get an APU, which Gaijin calls a "second heart" that keeps electrics running after the engine is destroyed. It's a separate module, it can be destroyed, and it can be switched off in combat so its noise doesn't give away your position. On many SPAAs and SAMs it runs constantly, so disabling it shuts down radar and other power-hungry systems.
Gaijin said it would follow up on "new mechanics related to turning and mobility of ground vehicles," and on Oct 30 it posted "Improving Tank Mobility Mechanics: New Steering Mechanisms & Engine Refinements" on Steam (not covered here).
Why it matters
APS on a Leopard changes how top-tier ATGM carriers and helicopters handle Germany and Sweden. And one shot to the electrical system can now blind a tank without killing it.
What's confirmed / not confirmed
Confirmed (Gaijin official posts): - "Eagle's Shadow" is the name of the next major update (trailer posted Oct 29, 2026). - The Leopard 2A8 comes to Germany and Sweden (Norwegian configuration for Sweden), with Trophy APS (6 charges), DM53 and Gen 3 thermals. - FCS, electrical system and APU modules, plus manual reloading for eligible autoloader tanks, are coming in the next major update.
Not confirmed: - The Eagle's Shadow release date and dev server date. - The Leopard 2A8's final battle rating, and whether it's tech-tree or premium. - The full vehicle list. We haven't included fan speculation about the trailer.
