Warframe: Tau Arrives Free in December: New Star System, the Brysko Warframe and Matthew Mercer

Primary sources: Digital Extremes, "October Warframe: Tau Devstream Highlights" (Oct 30, 2026); Digital Extremes press release via Games Press (Oct 30, 2026). Rechecked Oct 31, 2026. Also: Warframe Steam announcement, "Warframe: Tau Coming In December" (Oct 30).

Oct 30, 2026: Warframe is heading beyond the Origin System. In Devstream 198 on Oct 30, Digital Extremes gave its first in-depth look at Warframe: Tau. The studio says it's "arriving for free on all PC, console, and mobile platforms" in December 2026, with a new Star Chart, a cinematic story quest and the game's 67th Warframe, Brysko.

Leaving the Origin System

Tau is a new star system beyond the Origin System, with its own Star Chart. Digital Extremes ties it to last year's update: The Old Peace (Dec. 2025) "introduced players to what Tau once was," and Warframe: Tau (Dec. 2026) "will unearth what has become following eons of conflict."

Two locations launch in December, per the studio:

  • Perita, a moon of Fornax that Digital Extremes calls "a decayed wasteland." It hosts a revamped Survival mission.
  • Fornax, described as a "mob-run ring city," home to MANIFOLD 90-BF, a new social hub "full of new characters, rivals, and lore secrets."

There's also a new allied Syndicate, The Cleaving Glaive, which scavenges the Perita wasteland "in search of Tau secrets." Digital Extremes says Tau "evolves with each following update," so it plans to keep expanding the system.

Meet Brysko, Warframe #67

  • Free to get: Brysko "can be instantly unlocked from the Warframe Market or earned through gameplay" when Tau arrives.
  • Voice: Matthew Mercer voices Brysko "in a curious inner monologue." Digital Extremes says the character draws on detective noir and stars in Tau's single-player cinematic quest.
  • Kit highlights shown on stream: a Hound companion, the Rain & Shine fist weapons and an Exalted magnum called Corecracker.
  • New cosmetic class: Brysko "leads the charge" for the Chimera Skin, a cosmetic category the studio calls "all-new."

Digital Extremes didn't publish Brysko's full ability list in the written highlights. Its Steam post adds that, as with a Protoframe, you can switch between Brysko's Warframe and Chimera looks on the fly, with a more Sentient appearance and voice-acted dialogue. For the full kit, you'll need the Devstream VOD.

Fashion corner

  • Koumei Enshoujo, Koumei's first Deluxe Skin, releases alongside Tau in December.
  • Nezha Heirloom Skin: concept art was shown. It's co-designed with Sumo Digital and is due in early 2027.

Off-screen: a Warframe card game

The Portau Collection and Portau Playmat are up for pre-order on the official Warframe Merch Store. Digital Extremes scheduled a Portau tournament for its Princess Margaret Foundation Cancer Quest finale stream on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 12 p.m. ET on Warframe's Twitch and YouTube channels.

What the studio said

"Today is the first of two detailed looks at Warframe: Tau," said Megan Everett, Community Director at Digital Extremes. "We have a ton of surprises for our next Devstream on November 27, so please stay tuned for more!" She added that "the Origin System is not being left behind."

Why it matters

Our take: Digital Extremes' Steam post calls this its "most expansive update ever," and a whole new Star Chart, not just one more planet, makes this one of Warframe's biggest map changes in years. Because it's free on every platform, including mobile, lapsed players have a reason to come back. It also gives the community a fixed date to watch: Nov 27, the second Devstream, which Digital Extremes says will bring "a ton of surprises." (The studio hasn't said whether that's when an exact launch date will be announced.)
